Yes, You Can Change the World

Wonder and aweAs I prepare for my upcoming trip around the US, I am once again reminded that yes, each and everyone of us can change the world.  I wrote about this last spring, when I was inspired by Carrie Underwood's song 'Change'.  In the song, Carrie challenges us to make a difference, even in the smallest of scenarios.  Walking by a homeless person with only 36 cents in your pocket, she challenges: "what'cha gonna do?".  As I paddled up the Atlantic Ocean, I was moved very deeply by this song and its lyrics.  I used a black permanent marker to write her words on my kayak, right in front of me, a constant reminder that yes, we can change the world.

As I have moved into the planning stages for my next trip, the bike around America and my fight against Childhood Obesity, I was once again reminded of these powerful words and the impact that we each can have on one another.  I was pedaling up to my friend Dave's house 3 days ago for a long 60 mile training ride, fully loaded.  I reached a point where I was on a bike path and decided to go ahead and turn my music player on, letting the phone select the song.  As I fiddled with my headset and bike, I knew that I would be missing the beginning of whatever song had been chosen for me, but I was not worried, I was just excited to be grooving to some tunes.

Well, much to my surprise, the first lyrics that I hear are these:

You're just a fool
Just a fool
To believe you can change the world
You're just a fool
Just a fool
To believe you can change the world

Well, needless to say that brought a huge smile to my face and a hoot and holler to the SPIRIT world.  For you see, I no longer believe that these are coincidental things.  I believe, that their is something larger here, something very powerful that goes on when we align our lives with true LOVE, with true SPIRIT.  I took this as a sign that yes, I am on the right path and that yes, I can change the world.  I don't know how big or small it will be but I know that it will happen and it will happen for the better.

RipplesAnd so, for this trip, I will do my best to help create awareness about this terrible epidemic that our children our going through.  Childhood Obesity is a huge issue and something that we must do something about.  Today I read a report that showed that only something like 13% of children ride their bikes on a daily basis, down from a significantly larger number several years ago.

If I can inspire one family to become more active, putting down the remote control or video games, and getting back out to nature, then I will have made a difference.  I won't get caught up in how big or how small a change I make, for that is simply a loosing battle, one that often talks us right out of the very notion that we can change the world. Who is to say what ripple affect that parent or child will have in the future from the one change that I helped inspire?  No, I will focus on one small step at a time; one family at a time; one child at a time.

In this season of holiday cheer, with the spirit of giving that surrounds us all, and the notion of New Year resolutions, I lay down the challenge to you.  Make a choice that from this point forward you too will join the revolution and you too will make a difference.  Individually and collectively, YES, we can change the world.
