Today I am a Time Traveler with a Camera... Tomorrow, who knows

A dollar for each mile

For my upcoming 10,000 mile Bike Around America tour, I will be challenging you, my readers, and those that I meet along the way, to buy a mile, and help raise funds to fight Childhood Obesity.  This is a critical time for organizations that support our children, especially those that are outside of the core budget arena.  In today's economic downturn, school budgets are being cut; physical education and sports programs are being trimmed or eliminated; and education about health and nutrition is constantly on the chopping block.

My objective is to use my trip as a sound stage for this issue, using this website, my bike, and my single set of gears, to draw attention to this issue and get people involved.  As kids, many of us grew up on bikes, and a great number of us did so on those with only a single gear -- the ones that if you stopped pedaling, the crank kept going around and around, spinning out of control.  The only way to brake on those old bikes was to pedal backwards and hope you could stop in time.  Those bikes were the essence of Wabi Sabi, beauty found in their simplicity, often cobbled together from used parts found lying around the neighborhood.  In honor of those days gone by, and the many kids (and now adults) that ride single speed bikes today, I will  do the entire trip, 10,000 plus miles, on a Salsa Cycles Fargo, configured as a single speed.

I am thus challenging you to buy a mile (or more), for $1.00/mile.  If you do the simple math, it would be unbelievable if we could raise a minimum of $10,000 for organizations that support the health and fitness of our youth.  I am currently searching for a web based organization that will manage donations and allow you, the donor, to select the charity that you want your dollars to go to, while also keeping track of the total dollars donated from the collective group.  At a minimum I will pre-select a list of charities for you to choose from, but it may also be possible that the list can be expanded to organizations that are in your local area.

There are some wonderful nationwide organizations that are focusing on the Childhood Obesity issue, and those organizations are doing a great job of pushing the issue at the National level.  These organizations need our support but so do the smaller, more local non-profits.  As I mentioned above, I hope that the mechanism that gets put in place will allow for some flexibility in how each dollar is allocated.

If you have any thoughts or can be of assistance in bringing this effort to fruition, please either post your comment here, or send me an email with your contact information.  $10,000 is a very achievable goal if we just break it down, mile by mile, dollar by dollar, each of us making a contribution to the health and well being of our children. Details on how to Buy A Mile, will be available within the next 2 weeks.
